Lakota Sioux Indians declare Sovereign Nation Status

If the US government is promoting independence for Kosovo, they should have no problem in supporting this.

“WASHINGTON, DC (December 20) — Lakota Sioux Indian representatives declared sovereign nation status today in Washington DC following Monday’s withdrawal from all previously signed treaties with the United States Government. The withdrawal, hand delivered to Daniel Turner, Deputy Director of Public Liaison at the State Department, immediately and irrevocably ends all agreements between the Lakota Sioux Nation of Indians and the United States Government outlined in the 1851 and 1868 Treaties at Fort Laramie Wyoming.

    It might be interesting except that the people mentioned in the article are not legal representatives of the tribe. It’s just some activists attempting to garner headlines.

    The Indian reservations on United States soil are largely sovereign anyway, and as a consequence they are some of the poorest regions of the country, if not the world. We often have church groups go to work among the reservation Indians rather than ghettos in third world countries because the need is greater. Sovereignty is not the issue. That is what has doomed the Indians.

    Yes, if the tribe is federally recognized, then they are a sovereign Native American tribe. This status, as designated by the treaties signed between the US government and legal representatives of tribal governments, is only one step in many that tribes are fighting for. To some extent, Russell Mean’s actions are hurting the tribes more then helping. Effort and energy needs to go into social justice, education, resource management, etc., not political media attention grabbing tricks.
